Today, the rising Philadelphia Progressive Metalcore band, Kaonashi, are sharing their new EP, Why Did You Do It?, ahead of its release on Friday, November 23rd. Why Did You Do It? is a rollercoaster ride across seven tracks ranging from downright brutal riffs to serene, melodic moments. The EP serves as a concept album, following the characters of manic-depressive high school student Jamie, Morgan the bully, and love interest Casey as they sift through the throes of Lemon House High with guidance from The Counselor. A quote from Kaonashi on Why Did You Do It?:
As we went into the studio, our initial intention was to re-record our first EP, Native. About a week before, we decided to record brand new material which turned into Why Did You Do It?, following through on the concept we've been hinting at since our previous release. We basically wrote what we wanted to hear, and what we thought would push us beyond our abilities.
The album tells the story of Jamie, a student attending Lemon House High, going through the motions. Teachers, classmates, work, parents, love, loss, depression and so much more come into play; all the factors of pressure going through Jamie, a high school boy’s mind.
Why Did You Do It? was recorded with Evan Sammons + Jamie King (Between The Buried and Me, Last Chance To Reason), who helped the band push boundaries to hone in on the unique sound found across the record. Opener "Real Leather" starts aggressive right out the gate before heading into an infectious, pop-leaning chorus that invokes a wild sing-a-long during their live set. "Coffee and Conversation" marks the band's signature sound they've labeled “emo mathcore” while "M.O.R.G.A.N." shows a more melodic side with guest vocals from Michael Lessard of The Contortionist.

Formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 2012, Kaonashi erupted onto the scene in October 2013 with the release of their EP Native. Drawing from both hardcore and progressive acts such as Coheed & Cambria, Counterparts, and The Contortionist, Kaonashi has molded a technical, aggressive sound to call their own. With personal lyrics tackling the difficulties of depression and anxiety facing this generation, 2016 saw the release of their second EP Ex-Prayers and split with Sabella titled Never Home. Having built an intense and eager fan base for themselves with no label backing, Kaonashi will independently release their third EP Why Did You Do It? on November 23rd, bringing their sound to new heights. The band have previously shared the stage with the likes of Between The Buried and Me, Code Orange, and Knocked Loose and this fall will see Kaonashi heading out on a headlining run with support from Vatican and Cryptodira, followed by a December tour supporting I Set My Friends On Fire.
