St. Gallen, Switzerland five-piece DRILL channel raw emotion, electronic experimentation, and crushing modern heaviness into CATHARSIS, a seven-track EP spanning just over 17 minutes.
Across its compact runtime, CATHARSIS moves with little wasted space, delivering a collection of tightly constructed tracks that shift between aggression, atmosphere, melody, and experimentation. DRILL use the EP’s short format to their advantage, making every transition count while creating a record that feels constantly in motion.
The EP opens with the brief “Azula,” before launching into “Parasite,” featuring No Face No Case. From there, DRILL continue expanding the record’s palette with “Dead Center” featuring glitchBABY and “My Space” featuring XOXO, bringing additional voices and contrasting textures into the band’s sound.
The penultimate “Life Is Unfair – Dark Days Ahead,” featuring Odd Beholder, offers a particularly atmospheric change of pace at just 1:14, acting almost as an interlude before the EP closes with “Endless.” At more than four minutes, the closing track is the longest piece on CATHARSIS, giving DRILL room to bring the EP’s different elements together in its final stretch.
The collaborations play an important role throughout the release, with each guest adding another dimension to DRILL’s constantly shifting sonic identity. Rather than functioning as isolated features, the appearances help reinforce the EP’s sense of movement and experimentation.
With CATHARSIS, DRILL present a concise but varied release that refuses to stay locked into one mood. Seven tracks, multiple collaborations, and just over 17 minutes are enough for the St. Gallen outfit to deliver a record built around contrast, intensity, and constant evolution.
