This time our journey took us to a beautiful Austrian city Graz. As we arrived, we were welcomed by a warm winter evening. The location of the event was changed from Dom Im Berg to an exquisite Orpheum building that has a lot of character and you can't miss interesting art installation in front, two giant golden feet.
As a proper
procedure you grab a beer, settle, relax and wait for the show to begin. It was
just a bit unsettling that we couldn't find the timetable information to see
what’s coming next.
First on the
stage were Ukrainian band Space of Variations. Their beginnings reach to 2009
when they came to realize their potential and started forming the group in the
student years. They took a break for a few years and continued their journey
again in 2015 when they formed the cast and with their first English single
Gunsight created the name Space of Variations. Their music can be described as a mixture of metal, rock and electronic style, but they state that they are not
limited to a specific kind of brand. They love to experiment and create unique
sounds that comes from their true passion and feelings in the moment.
The band was
able to bring their exceptional energy right at the beginning and it didn't
take long for the crowd to warm up and share the excitement. They exploited the
stage with running, moving and jumping that completed their energetic songs. In
their performance, we were able to hear “Tibet”, “Fuck this place up”,
“Moonlight” and many others.
The frontman
created feeling for the crowd being a part of the gig the whole time and in the
end he concluded with mixing with the fans that ended their show with a great
personal touch.
Next up was
a Finnish alternative metal band Khroma that was formed back in 2010.
Since their
beginnings they made two albums: Collapse (2014) and Stasis (2016). During
their time on the stage, they created a more serious and spacey atmosphere with
down-tuned guitar patterns and pumping trip-hop beats with which they created
powerful ambiance where the audience could get the feeling of their strong
lyrics messages that describe society issues. They played “The Push”,
“Collapse” and among others, they also performed their new single “Kill The
Friction” that was released in November. I'm happy to share that they are in
the making of a new album that we will be able to hear in Spring 2020. Keep up
the good work guys!
We were
honored by the presence of Canadian band The Agonist. As they were formed from
2004 they were known for the ability to combine clean vocals and metal
growls. Vicky Psarakis who joined them in 2014 proved herself an amazing
vocalist in the upcoming albums Eye of Providence (2015), Five (2016) and the
latest Orphans that was released just a few months ago in September.
They
performed songs “Burn it all down”, “As one we survive”, “In Vertigo” and
others, where you could feel the strong energy of the song message.
Lead singer
created a powerful atmosphere with her gentle voice and warm presence that
escalated with her strong growls that made the whole show a journey from the
beginning and ended with a great invitation to come after the show by the merch
stand where you can support them and also just talk and grab a beer with the
band.
At the end
came the anticipated performance of Jinjer, who I believe don't need a special
introduction, since they grew to, became progressive metal groove giants that
have stuck together and preserved honest selves while they grew and established
their name in the industry. Since displaying their amazing talents with three
albums throughout the years, they have released “Micro” EP in January, that had
some personal content for the band and later they created follow-up album Macro
in October 2019.
During their
performance Tatiana Shmailyuk filled the entire venue with her strong decisive
presence and made the perfect final show and fulfill our expectations with her
elegance and edgy energy completed with an amazing fusion of different styles and
atmospheres through their performance. They amazed us with some songs from
their previous albums like “Sit Stay Roll Over”, “Who's Gonna Be the One”,
presented their “Micro” EP and latest “Macro” album with “Retrospection”,
“Dreadful Moments”, “Judgement (& Punishment)”, “On the Top”, “Perennial”
and others. They properly ended the night with an encore of “Pisces”.
Even though
the concert ended an hour later than scheduled it was worth every second of it.
Bands did a great job and left us with ecstatic feeling that overcame even the
enormous parking bill that we got from the garage close to Orpheum.
We wish you
all best in the upcoming concerts and hope we'll have the chance to hear all of
those great talents again, see you grow and spread that awesome spirit around
the globe.
