Hundreds of fans gathered Thursday night in
Huntington Beach to remember Mitch Lucker, the 28-year-old frontman of
deathcore band Suicide Silence who died earlier in the day from injuries
he suffered during a motorcycle crash.
The Riverside native crashed his
motorcycle shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday. Lucker was taken to UCI
Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead Thursday, police
said.
Condolences poured onto the Suicide Silence Facebook page, where the band posted this message:
"There's no easy way to say this.
Mitch passed away earlier this morning from injuries sustained during a
motorcycle accident. This is completely devastating to all of us and we
offer our deepest condolences to his family. He will be forever in our
hearts.
"R.I.P. Mitchell Adam Lucker - We Love You Brother"
Lucker was apparently in the midst of
creating new songs for Suicide Silence, which had been growing in
popularity and has more than 2 million Facebook fans.
The band made its debut in the early
2000s and its latest release in July 2011 "sold quite a bit," according
to Rodney Ford with Amoeba Music. Ford described Suicide Silence as
falling into a new genre of music dubbed deathcore, a mix between death
metal and hardcore punk.
The band from Southern California was given the Golden Gods award for best new talent by Revolver magazine in 2009, according to Reuters.
Lucker tweeted this on Oct. 12: "Currently working on new @suicidesilence songs. Be #stoked #i<3myjob"
On Wednesday night, Lucker
reportedly lost control of his motorcycle and collided with a light pole
on the west side of Main at 13th streets, Huntington Beach police Sgt.
Jon Haught told City News Service.
After colliding with the pole, the
motorcycle continued south on Main Street and slammed into a black 2007
Nissan Titan pickup truck, northbound on Main, Haught said.
The occupants of the Titan and nearby trick-or-treaters avoided injury, Haught said.
The cause of the collision was still under investigation. Anyone with information was asked to call police at (714) 536-5666.
Thursday night's memorial was held in Huntington Beach, where Lucker lived with his wife and 5-year-old daughter.
But, according to Lucker's father Michael, the 28 year old's "heart was for his hometown" in the Inland Empire.
