Portuguese extreme metal outfit GAEREA have released their new EP, SHALLOW, expanding their collaborative approach with a collection built around different interpretations of the same song. Among its featured versions is “SHALLOW (Acoustic Version),” featuring acclaimed cellist and composer JO QUAIL, accompanied by an official music video. The collaboration brings a different instrumental voice into GAEREA’s emotionally charged material, stepping away from the full force of their usual extreme metal sound to explore a more stripped-back arrangement. With SHALLOW now available, the release offers another perspective on the band’s evolving creative direction.
The new EP follows GAEREA’s collaborative release LOSS and continues their exploration of alternative interpretations of their own music. Rather than presenting a collection of unrelated tracks, SHALLOW revolves around four versions of the same composition: the original recording, a remix by Portuguese psy-trance act PARANORMAL ATTACK, the acoustic rendition featuring JO QUAIL, and a piano version featuring Juan L. Otaiza. Each version approaches the song from a different musical angle, allowing the central composition to take on new forms without losing its identity.
JO QUAIL’s cello adds a distinctive dimension to the acoustic rendition, introducing a different texture to GAEREA’s dark and emotionally driven sound. Known for her work as a cellist and composer, Quail brings her own musical voice to the collaboration, shifting the focus towards the arrangement and atmosphere. The result stands apart from the band’s heavier material while remaining connected to the original “SHALLOW,” making this version a notable part of the EP.
With SHALLOW out now, GAEREA invite listeners to experience the track through four different interpretations, each revealing another side of the composition. Watch the official music video for “SHALLOW (Acoustic Version)” featuring JO QUAIL, stream the new EP, and explore the different approaches that shape this release. For a band continually finding new ways to present its music, SHALLOW offers a compelling look beyond the expected boundaries of extreme metal.
