MOTHICA Released New EP "Somewhere In Between (Mothicorp’s Lofi Breakroom Beats)"

Mothica–the LA-based singer, performer, and visual artist McKenzie Ellis–digitally released her new EP "Somewhere In Between (mothicorp’s lofi breakroom beats)", a hypnotic reworking of her acclaimed debut for SharpTone Records. Recorded at Mothicorp Studios in collaboration with Nathan Miller AKA Icarus Moth, the new collection sees the "Somewhere in Between" EP’s five original heavy and dynamic tracks fully remixed beyond recognition. Visualizers for all the songs were also created by Chris Klumpp; watch “weapon (lofi).” “Somewhere In Between has always lived in an emotional and liminal space for me. Turning these songs into lofi remixes with Nathan Miller only felt natural,” McKenzie explains. “I wanted them to feel like memories you revisit at 2am, softer, dreamier and a little haunted. I’m so excited to have these on a cassette designed by Madison Schubert so my fans can feel the nostalgia in this sound even more.” The cassette edition of Somewhere In Between (mothicorp’s lofi breakroom beats), due out mid July, is now available for pre-order HERE.

Following an extensive spring tour supporting I See Stars, Mothica will next play 10 shows at the end of summer supporting Jutes, including LA’s The Wiltern (9/23); a full itinerary is listed below and tickets are on-sale now.

2026 has seen Mothica’s star continue to rise with the February release of "Somewhere in Between" and a remix for HEALTH arriving soon after. Featuring singles “WEAPON,” “Save Your Roses,” and “Evergreen Misery,” her latest EP introducing a new era that’s “heavier and louder than ever before” earned praise and support from Kerrang! (cover story), Knotfest (She’s With The Band podcast), Hit Parader, Spotify’s All New Metal playlist, MARVIN, CBC Music, Ghost Cult (9/10 stars), Metal Anarchy, and more.

Mckenzie has gracefully navigated personal despair since beginning her work as Mothica as a teenager. With potent songs detailing everything from surviving a suicide attempt at age 15 (“forever fifteen”), to going public about an abusive youth pastor in her most popular track (“Buzzkill”), she has seen her audience grow globally via tours with icons like Coheed & Cambria, Halestorm, and many others, while tallying hundreds of millions of streams (2020’s "VICES" charted on Billboard and reached No. 2 on iTunes’ pop chart). After getting sober, releasing three albums, relapsing and getting sober again, Mothica is now back and bolder than ever on Somewhere In Between, opening up her heart with intention.

In 2024, a pivotal decision instigated the sonic evolution that followed: Mckenzie had fallen back into a pill addiction fueled by her intense phobia of airplane travel. While touring Europe, she realized she needed to get clean and go back to basics before her next record. “I made the terrifying decision to cancel my first-ever headline tour and went to rehab,” she recalls. “A lot of intense emotions I had been numbing came up. I thought about quitting music because the anxieties around traveling and the industry is what lead me back to substance abuse. I was mad at myself for letting it go that far. Finally, I thought, ‘Why don’t I channel these feelings into some angry music?’ I’ve always wanted to combine pop songwriting with grittier, heavier guitars.”

"Somewhere in Between" represents a return to self for Mckenzie, and a chance to open up her sound in new ways. “Getting sober again opened my heart up to feeling all the things I had been numbing. Looking at myself from an honest lens, no matter how unflattering, unveiled an intense urge to write more music,” she explains. “Heavier guitars, punchier vocals, cinematic synths. It was tricky figuring out what ‘flavor’ of rock that’d feel true to me, creating this combination of dark pop and rock and metal. I worked with new collaborators, with songs produced by Elliot Polokoff (Drop Dead Gorgeous), Curt Martin (Catch Your Breath), Zach Jones (The Home Team, Scene Queen, Fever 333) and some co-production by me.”
