Ex-MASTODON Guitarist Brent Hinds Dead at 51

Brent Hinds, the founding guitarist and co-vocalist of Mastodon, has tragically died at age 51 following a motorcycle collision in Atlanta. The Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed that Hinds was fatally injured when his Harley-Davidson was struck by a BMW SUV that failed to yield while turning at an intersection. The accident occurred around 11:35 p.m. on August 20, and Hinds was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hinds co-founded Mastodon in 2000 alongside Troy Sanders, Brann Dailor, and Bill Kelliher, helping shape the band's signature blend of progressive, sludge, and alternative metal. Over a 20-year run, the band released eight studio albums, earning critical acclaim and winning a Grammy in 2018 for “Sultan’s Curse”.

Following his departure from the band in March 2025, believed by some to be under contentious circumstances, news of Hinds's death sent shockwaves through the music community. Mastodon issued a statement expressing their deep grief:

“We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force… our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans.”
“At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.”

Hinds had a rich musical background, beginning with the banjo before transitioning to the guitar. He participated in various side projects over the years, including Fiend Without a Face and Giraffe Tongue Orchestra, leaving an indelible mark on the heavy music genre with his technical skill and bold creativity

He is survived by his wife, Raisa Moreno, and a legacy of music that continues to inspire. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
