CALIBAN, IN HEARTS WAKE, CABAL, ASSEMBLE THE CAHRIOTS@FLEX, VIENNA; AUSTRIA; May 14th, 2025 (VIDEO)

We were once again in the capital of Austria, Vienna, just after two weeks to attend the Back From Hell tour of German metalcore champs Caliban with special guests from Australia, In Hearts Wake, Danish deathcore force Cabal, and Finnish deathcore act Assemble the Chariots again in the Flex club.

That there is always traffic we already know that from several other occasions, but this time we had a cue right before the city of 16km, and it was painful to watch the time if we would arrive in time to catch the first band. Luckily, we did see 2 and a half songs from the Assemble The Chariots.

This Deathcore band from Finland, yes, not really a deathcore country, but nevertheless, as much as we could see from those two and a half songs, they did a good job of warming up the crowd for the next bands.  They have some symphonic elements. Definitely a band worth checking!

The next band was one of my personal favourites and on my list, the band that I still didn't have the chance to catch up live yet, despite performing 2 times in my town, to this day I missed them for one reason or another.

I followed the band from the start, so I was eager to see how they do live. Ok, I watched some videos here and there, but as you know, seeing it live is a totally different experience. The band released the new album "Everything Rots" in March. The band posted on socials the setlists for this tour, so there were no surprises about what would be on the setlist. They played most of the new album, plus two from the previous "Magno Interritus", a title song, and Extsanguination, two singles.
They opened with the album opener, a slow and short crushing Become Nothing, and then followed with the mayhem Redemption Deniad. The crowd went crazy. Moshing, circle pits start to erupt in the middle. The part was on!
Exsangunaition is one of my faves from them, and seeing it live, I was in my happiest place.
Still Cursed followed, and. after that was Unveiled. It was the full battlefield in the pit! The band got us to rave with them. Snake Tongues.
We were approaching almost the finish line, so it was the perfect time for End Times and the start of the wall of death.

The last two were Violent Ends and Magno Interitus.
The Cabal guys put an amazing show and are definitely one of the hardest working bands in Europe, and I can say the number one European Deathcore band!

Next were In Hearts Wake that I saw only one time os far, and it was quite a time ago at the Impericon festival in Munich, Germany. The band parted ways with the long-time bassist and clean vocalist, Kyle Erich.
Oh boy, we had an interesting show with a lot of surprises.
The first one was that the band started the show with Spitting Nails, and some guy stood in the center of the stage, and the band started to play. He was holding the fleshlight and pointed in the centre, and bang, there was Jake Taylor in the middle of the crowd screaming. Then followed by Tyrant, Hellbring, and The Force of Life.
Jake Taylor got some extra time to talk about the floods that hit Australia and their hometown. For those of you who don't know, the band is always been involved and outspoken regarding the environmental issues.
You guessed it right, it was time for the Flood.

He also pointed out that we are living with many obstacles in life, and we are running fast forward. He got a massive applause from the crowd.

The band on the last two albums was experimenting more with electronics, which to me personally didn't got into as much as previous records, and I like electronic sounds too.

The setlist continued with Gen Doom, Shishigami. After that, on the stage arrived two completely black vested till heads-up people. Crisis was on! Not literally, but the song! We could see how well if it's done right, the coreagrophy could work in metalcore. The two dances were moving accordingly with the sound performed by the band. For the last track, the mask and dress came off, and the crowd loved did. The girl and the guy, two dancers, complemented very well with the show. The band ended with "Orphan" and the crowd was pleased. I missed one of my faves in the setlist, Nomad.

The final act for the night was headliners, German metalcore titans, Caliban. That the band has been active for a long time, you can see in the crowd. In a long time, I could see that there were at least half of the crowd in their 30 and over, and not under.
The band parted ways with the long-time bassist Marco Schaller, who was replaced with Kenneth Iain Duncan, who also takes part in clean vocals.
For the band to be so long on the scene and in metalcore, especially, we could count them how many are on one hand.

They opened with Gulit Trip from the new album Back From Hell, just released at the ned of April.
The band followed with a new one I Was A Happy Kid Once. Then came the time for one of their biggest hits, Paralyzed. The crowd was ecstatic, to say at least. The band is a very oiled machine, and the performance was impressive.
The crowd was eating every word from frontman Andreas Dörner.
One of the band's faves, at least in the German-speaking market, is  Ich blute für Dich (I Bleed for You) that the crowd sang a long and loved!
The band then served us with the Virus from Dystopia album. The band offered then two new ones, Insomina and the title track, Back From Hell before leaving the stage.
But this was just for the encore. We got delivered still three more songs. Memorial was the first one, from the I Am Nemsis album, the old one, Devil's Night, and the final oldie goldie, Nothing Is Forever.

One thing is certain. This night we will cherish forever. It was a beautiful night, with amazing bands that each one of them made special in their own way. Till next time!
